I'm Shakiyla Sincere, creator and facilitator for UnlearningRacism.
Since 2012, I've helped university students, staff, and faculty find the power and confidence to impact the world and relate to themselves, other individuals, and groups by becoming more mindful about the ways race and racialized oppression affect our day-to-day lives.
I got my start in student affairs at Howard University as a Resident Assistant, guiding and advising my peers on the educational, emotional, and social "wins" and "woes" life throws at us. At the same time, I was earning one degree in Psychology, another in Criminal Justice, and went on to start a career and earn a Master's degree in Forensic Psychology from Syracuse University. Since then, I've started my PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution with George Mason University and I've made strides in helping students and colleagues find their voice in speaking up and out against all forms of bias in their communities.
I encourage people to become change agents through activism, protest, and organization. In my career as a student affairs professional, I have often facilitated after-hours programming, administered inclusion trainings, and presented at local and regional conferences. I've created workshops & trainings that have empowered and enlightened more than 500+ people on the East Coast and I've only just begun.
UnlearningRacism is the culmination of the knowledge I gained, experiences I've shared, and skills I've picked up in my own journey toward understanding and rectifying racial inequity. I don't claim to be an expert, or a guru, or a magical unicorn with all the right answers, BUT! I do have a proven method that has been successful for me that I would like to share with you.
I'm committed to helping people like you build meaningful connections with others over difference for increased freedom, engagement, recognition, and impact.
So, my only question for you is: Are you ready to stop telling people you're "not racist" and start being actively antiracist?
Welcome! Get to know other participants and get your course introduction and blueprint. Learn my “ICANT to ICANN” philosophy about having race-based discussions.
Learn how to create a brave space for yourself and others and gain necessary background knowledge for conversations about race.
Race affects us all in different ways. This week we will explore how race manifests in our lives and the lives of those around us.
Language has meaning. This week we learn that what we say and how we say it greatly affects how race-based conversation resonates with those who participate in it.
This is week is about the nitty-gritty of why we’re here. With all that we have learned about ourselves and how race is infused into our everyday life, how do we have successful conversations about race?
As we wrap up our time together we engage in some introspection of our journey, of ourselves as individuals, and ourselves as a group. How have we changed and how will we turn this change into action?
This course is unit based. Each week, we will meet as a cohort (of no more than 12) for a live, group-coaching session. These sessions are recorded and you will have forever access to previous sessions and course materials.
No. Each unit is meant to be worked on and focused on both in a group and individually. You can always refer to previous lessons for more introspective work, but the dialogue that takes place within the cohort is a big part of the learning. Between all the lessons, tasks, live sessions, and challenges, you’ll find the structure helpful in avoiding being overwhelmed.
This course is about 1 ½ hour commitment with me each week. How much time you spend on outside assignments is completely up to you. A number of the challenges and “homework” tasks will occur organically in your everyday life. If you find that you do not have the time you feel necessary to commit to the course, just let me know and we will get you into a future cohort.
I am here to be your mentor. You can email me as often you as you need to and I will help troubleshoot your problems. We also have weekly 1-on-1s in which you can share your thoughts candidly without judgement. I want you to succeed!
This course is updated after each cohort to make sure all of the content is up to date with the needs expressed by past cohorts. Every time I attempt and perfect a new technique, it goes in this course. Our last update was May 2018.
By no means am I here to tell you what you’re doing isn’t working. If you have had success with your own method of addressing bias with folks I encourage you to keep doing great work! However, even those with experience will benefit from the content in this course. Racial justice work requires a constant commitment to having new experiences and questioning...
I would never want you to be unhappy! If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, contact me in the first 30 days and I will give you a full refund. But, you must show you have committed to all of the course material up to that point, because none of the knowledge you gain through this process will work without you taking the time to commit to deepening your understanding of race and American racism.
If you don't see your question here, please send me an email at hello@shakiyladsincere.com, and I will send you the information you need!
